The Main Street Program is a state program and is coordinated by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.  McDonough's program is funded by the City of McDonough.  Main Street is a community based self help program.  It is based on a four point approach for the downtown district within the context of historic preservation and restoring a sense of place in the county seat of McDonough through economic development and downtown revitalization with the four point approach.

McDonough is a Georgia Main Street city as well as a National Main Street city.

Our Vision statement: McDonough "Main Street" to market and reestablish the downtown district as the historic county seat and to create an economic mecca while preserving our heritage and traditions.

Our Mission statement: Encourage and support economic growth through revitalization efforts, by involving local businesses and the citizens of this community.

From the Desk of the Main Street McDonough Program:

Three Statistics That Every Downtown Should Live By

Copied from posts by Roger Brooks     www.rogerbrooks.org

1.  70% of first-time sales at restaurants, retail shops, lodging facilities and attractions can come from curb appeal.  Beautification or curb appeal is an investment with a tremendous return.

2.  Women account for 80% of all consumer spending.  Women will spend more money in places that are inviting, clean and feel safe.  Women also account for 70% of all travel decisions including places to lodge, dine and "must see" attactions.

3.  70% of all consumer retail spending takes place after 6:00 P.M. ARE YOU OPEN?  If not, you are not competing with the mall's later hours.  In the 60's, stores typically closed at 6:00 P.M., 5:00 on Saturdays and closed on Sundays.  Fast forward to today, you'll find every successful mall opening at 10:00 and staying open until 9:00 or later seven days a week.

Meanwhile traditional downtowns are stuck in the 1960's.  While we are moving to the European standard of dining and shopping later in the evenings, downtowns haven't made the change at all.

  REASON TO SHOP LOCAL!

Buying local is the right choice for our schools, our families and for our community.  Keep our community strong.  Invest in our locally owned businesses and keep your money in our town!
